אם־אשכחך ירושלים תשכח ימיני:
תדבק־לשוני לחכי אם־לא אזכרכי אם־לא אעלה את־ירושלים על ראש שמחתי:
If I forget you, O Jerusalem, let my right hand wither;
Let my tongue stick to my palate if I cease to think of you,
if I do not keep Jerusalem in memory even at my happiest hour.
-Psalm 137:5-6
The verses, traditionally sung prior to the breaking of the glass at a Jewish wedding, symbolize that even at apex moments of jubilation those gathered ought to reflect on the sacking of Jerusalem by the Babylonians and then the Romans resulting in the destruction of the First and Second Temples on the same day, the Ninth of Av, nearly seven centuries apart.
This Monday at 7:00pm, please join us at the JCC for our Tisha b’Av service that will begin with the reading of Eichah/Lamentations and followed by a screening of the 2021 Israeli film ‘Legend of Destruction’ presented in English with a follow-on discussion.

Announcements
Wednesday night’s event welcoming the Eshkol in Japan 2024: Change Maker Program may well have been the highlight of the year if not decade at the JCC. Thank you to everyone who joined us including our speakers Ambassador Gilad Cohen, Deputy Director General Takahashi, Sherry Greenfield, Jeremy Raper, MC Micah Epstein, the visiting teens and teachers from Israel’s Eshkol Region and violinist Eijin Nimura, UNESCO Artist for Peace.
A special debt of gratitude is reserved for Mayo Hotta of enForward, Mor Eliyahu of the Israeli Embassy who helped put the program together and the incredible JCC staff who rose to the occasion in making the evening a success. We appreciate the support of our sponsors who wished to remain anonymous so as not to draw attention away from the delegation. Kol haKavod!
Please join us next Friday night and Saturday morning as we celebrate the Bar Mitzvah of a visiting family from New York. Why come to Tokyo when there is a synagogue on every corner in NYC? Come ask them yourselves and find out!
Yiddish Club with Jack Halpern: Please contact Jack at jack@cjki.org if you are interested to join. All levels are welcome, from beginner to advanced. Much more than just language, the club’s monthly meetings explore Yiddish culture as well.
