JCC Shabbat Newsletter – Parshat Eikev

This past Friday as we were celebrating 体育の日 Health and Sports Day, your JCC was inundated with calls and e-mails from Jews landing in Tokyo without access to kosher food, prayer books and other religious items that the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee had assured would be taken care of upon arrival. Since that was clearly not the case, we paused our festivities, leveraging member relationships and resources to meet the needs of Jewish athletes, staff and journalists all over our archipelagic nation. Needless to say, the JCC’s spirit of おもてなし remains stronger than ever. Please see the below image of a Team USA doctor practically glowing after receiving a care package from your rabbi in the Olympic Village on Sunday. He shared that the Chumash/Bible he received opened to the exact Parsha and Aliyah from his Bar Mitzvah. Talk about hashgachat pratit/divine providence.

Services

We invite you to in-person Shabbat services this Saturday morning (7/31) at 10am. Please RSVP by replying to this e-mail. Social distancing guidelines will be maintained. Thank you to Todd Walzer and David Tropp for leyning.

Friday night Kabbalat Shabbat will begin on Zoom at 6:00pm through July 23rd.

Schedule for Summer Shabbat morning 10am in-person services: 7/31, 8/14, 8/28

Deluxe Kiddush of Egg Salad, Hummus and Challah Rolls will follow Shabbat morning services. Kiddush is sponsored by the Bleiweis Family in honor of Stella’s Bat Mitzvah in Bethesda, Maryland earlier this month. With any luck, all who attend on Shabbat morning will get a taste of Stella’s brilliance via her ‘encore’ performance.

This week’s Shabbocktail of Scotch and Soda is sponsored by the the Scheer family in memory of Tali’s dad, Stuart Zipper, whose 6th yahrzeit we observe this Shabbat. Stu, as he was affectionately known in the Denver Jewish community, always made sure that his synagogue’s liquor cabinet never ran dry. More than the hard stuff, he was a Perrier devotee so instead of mixing with the Wilkinson Tansan, we invite you to raise one of the famous pear shaped, green glass bottles with us in Stu’s memory.

Next Kiddush available for sponsorship is TBD.
