As much as the JCC is back to our post-High Holidays ‘normal’, we find ourselves blessed with the unusual, extraordinary, and increasingly rare opportunity to learn with a Holocaust survivor and educator this coming Saturday night on 10/29. You can find a blurb about the speaker, Hedy Bohm, her fascinating presentation, and registration details on the sign-up page.
Tragically, the initial speaker we were in contact with, Max Eisen, passed away in July underscoring the urgency of hearing personal stories from the Shoah as memory fades into history. While it is heartening that the vast majority of the >500 registrants are Japanese with no affiliation to Judaism, we would like to demonstrate a strong showing from the JCC and so ask that you please consider signing up.

Our beloved Yakult Swallows desperately need our help especially after Thursday night’s soul-crushing defeat in walk-off fashion to the Orix Buffaloes. Each of the Swallows’ two losses occurred in incredibly tight games with a tie(!) separating an initial 2-0 lead from the more concerning 2-2 current state of affairs.
While I would never suggest invoking Divine Intercession in baseball, I am equally unwilling to entirely discount the idea. So even if you don’t usually attend service, this Shabbat might not be the worst time to show up and say a prayer from the JCC to Jingu. Don’t do it for me or even for The Gipper but for Murakami-san, Sneed-san and of course Takatsu-sama. Go Go Swallows!
Yiddish Club with Jack Halpern: Meetings have started monthly in-person at the JCJ. Please contact Jack at jack@cjki.org if you are interested to join. All levels are welcome, from beginner to advanced. Much more than just language, the club enjoys exploring Yiddish culture as well.
